About MPA

The chemical family of methacrylates was discovered in the 19th Century. The methacrylates polymerize easily and the range of monomers is used in a number of industries by polymer chemists to design polymers with a broad range of beneficial features: stability, durability, hardness and scratch resistance for example. Today over 6.57 billion pounds per year of Methacrylic monomers are used worldwide on all continents. (CEH, 2012)

The Methacrylate Producers Association, Inc. (MPA) was formed in 1987. Membership in MPA is open to manufacturers of methacrylates. Its members are: The Dow Chemical Company, Evonik Oil Additives, USA Inc., Roehm America LLC, and Mitsubishi Chemical Group Corporation. MPA member companies work jointly to address important Health, Safety and Environmental issues involving the basic methacrylate monomer products.

Since its formation, MPA has focused on regulatory, technical and product stewardship issues facing methacrylates (e.g., methacrylic acid, n-butyl methacrylate, ethyl methacrylate, i-butyl methacrylate, methyl methacrylate and 2-ethylhexyl methacrylate and other higher esters). As part of this work MPA has completed a significant voluntary testing program for these compounds, in support of the continued manufacture and use of these products in a broad range of application areas that are important to the quality of our everyday lives.
